Diwali 2023: A Festival of Lights and Celebration

Introduction

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most popular and widely celebrated festivals in India. It is a festival of lights, signifying the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali is also a time for new beginnings and fresh starts.

Date and Significance of Diwali 2023

Diwali falls on the 15th day of Kartik, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar. In 2023, Diwali will be celebrated on **Sunday, November 12**. The word "Diwali" is derived from the Sanskrit words "deep" meaning lamp and "avali" meaning row. Thus, Diwali is a festival of lamps, and people illuminate their homes and surroundings with diyas (oil lamps) to ward off evil spirits and welcome prosperity and good fortune.

History of Diwali

Diwali is connected to various religious events, deities and personalities, such as being the day Rama returned to his kingdom in Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana after defeating the demon king Ravana.[14] It is also widely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and Ganesha, the god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles.[15] Other regional traditions connect the holiday to Vishnu, Krishna, Durga, Shiva, Kali, Hanuman, Kubera, Yama, Yami, Dhanvantari, or Vishvakarman.

Diwali Traditions and Festivities

Diwali is a five-day festival, with each day having its own significance. The main celebrations take place on the third day, which is the day of the new moon.
